8 team playoff is the way to go

  1. Todd Graham, ASU coach, is pushing for this with the Power 5 Conference champions getting an automatic invitation with 3 at large spots. I agree with this.

  2. Winning a conference championship game must mean something. It doesn’t matter if a 2 or 3 loss team from one division beats a 0 loss team from the other in the championship game. The fact of the matter is that everybody playing that game knows what’s at stake – so, you either overcome or fall to the pressure involved. The winner is the champion – end of story.

  3. On an annual basis, there should be some mechanism to measure how the P5 conferences measure up against themselves and to confirm "strength of schedule" comparison.

  4. In this regards, every school in a P5 conference must play a minimum of 1 game against another P5 school.

  5. Each P5 conference would have 2-3 schools play against all the other conferences. [I haven’t worked out the math or scheduling]. Again by tabulating the results, you can see if there is a true difference between the P5 conferences. Rather than hearing how strong this conference is or how irrelevant that one is.

  6. To ensure that no school is avoiding anyone else, this should be done on a rotational basis, unless "rivalry" requests are made and they should be approved within the respective conferences involved.

  7. Let’s use Alabama as an example. Apart from its SEC scheduled opponents, it would have to play, over however many years it takes, each school in the ACC, Big 10, Big 12 and Pac12. The same, obviously, would apply to all the other P5 schools.

  8. To ensure that there is no home field advantage, the choice would be home and home games [which would take twice as many years to go through all the schools]. The alternative would be to play half the games at home and half away [the trouble here is establishing which are the "strong" and "weak" teams]. Again using Alabama as an example, it would be unfair for it to play home games against a given conferences stronger teams while it plays the weaker teams away.

  9. If any of the P5 conferences doesn’t want to get involved in the mandatory inter-conference games then they would be prohibited from getting any one of the 3 open spots. After all, what would be the basis for getting one or two more teams into the playoff.

  10. The mandatory inter-conference games should be used even if a 16 team playoff is ever implemented [something that I am definitely against].
