Report: Ohio State defensive tackle Joel Hale could move to offensive line

Ohio State senior Joel Hale could make the transition from defensive tackle to offensive guard.

The 2013 Ohio State offensive line featured four seniors, leaving four starting spots open in spring practice and fall camp.

It's likely redshirt sophomore to be Pat Elfein will nab one of the starting guard spots, having performed well when he was given extended playing time in the Michigan and Michigan State games, junior to be Jacoby Boren will likely claim the starting spot at center, with junior to be Taylor Decker returning to the starting lineup as the left tackle.

The other two spots however, are completely up for grabs. Earlier today, Bob Hunter of the Columbus Dispatch reported that senior defensive tackle Joel Hale could play some guard in spring practice and if he performs well, he could be officially moved over to the offensive side of the football.

Among those who could be in the mix is defensive tackle Joel Hale. Word from the Woody Hayes Athletic Center is that Hale, a senior who was a mainstay in the defensive line rotation the past two seasons, will be tried at offensive guard in the spring. The Greenwood, Ind., native was a two-way player in high school whose aggressiveness might prompt the switch.

While it might seem a bit weird the coaching staff is wiling to move a guy in Hale, who has played a significant role on the defensive line during his time in Columbus and has even started some games, it does make a little bit of sense. Ohio State has one of the deepest defensive line in the nation and there are a little bit on uncertainty on the offensive side of the line.

Ohio State did sign five defensive linemen in their 2014 recruiting class in the likes of Jamarco Jones, Demetrius Knox, Kyle Trout, Marcelys Jones, and Brady Taylor, but the coaching staff might want a more experienced player starting next season.
