Ohio State Student Appreciation Day practice report

Ohio State athletics

Today, Urban and Company busted open the doors of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center and let the students come in and watch a practice. The practice was a good day and started off with the circle drill and a lot of energy by the players and students.

The team then went into a scrimmage. There were a lot of good plays on both sides of the ball. I was very impressed by Cardale Jones and his work in the passing game. We saw him make some good runs but he looked really sharp at times. The O-Line blocked well for Cardale and Ezekiel Elliott looked very good. My sight lines were not great so I couldn't make out every play. However, Braxton Miller was behind every play with the headset on which was a good sight to see

I also got to get a look at J.T. Barrett. He was a little less sharp but also looked explosive at times and the talent is there, he just needs some more reps. Dontre Wilson was also looking very explosive and looked bigger than last year, which should definitely help him progress. Eli Apple also stood out and got his black stripe removed which was a big moment. He laid a huge hit on Jeff Greene (let's not injure the players in practice Eli!) and then got an interception on a tipped ball.

The Ohio Student Government was also offering tours of the facility. As someone who has never been around the facility I was extremely impressed and had a great time. I must also say if I was a recruit, I'd have one hell of a time walking out of there without committing. (Besides the fact that I would have committed to the Buckeyes the moment they offered.) The dedication to tradition and school's past is amazing and you have no shortage of motivation walking through the building. Also i got to put on a helmet (still not clear if we were allowed to do this) and take a picture with a Heisman (because how many chances do you get with a Heisman?).

After the scrimmage, the team worked on some goal line situations (The offense did very well), and some field goals (Sean Nuernberger did not disappoint). Urban then let some students take a few attempts and a few were actually close from about 45+ on the hash. They finished up activities with the Intramural Flag Football Championship and the Fastest Student Race. The students and a number of players, coaches and Bobby Carptenter ran heats. Coach Coombs ran well for about 20 yards in one heat before falling behind. New Buckeyes Johnnie Dixon and Raekwon McMillian ran in a few heats. Neither won the heat, but Johnnie did throw down the standing back flip after the race to make up for it.

After the races finished up, the players and coaches stuck around for a meet and greet with the fans. I got a few autographs on my hat. There was a circle of people around Braxton Miller at least 10 people deep.

All in all it was a great day for the fans and the team. Hope you guys enjoyed my write up and enjoyed the day if you got to go.
