Anyone close to the Ohio State football program in any varying degree or context is familiar with Ohio State legend Chris Spielman and probably his post-football career and life as well. The closer your allegiance/affiliation gets, the more inclined you are to know about the brave battle his late wife Stefanie waged against breast cancer. While Stefanie passed away November 19, 2009, her memory lives on with the Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research, which to date has raised over $10,000,000 to try and combat the heinous disease which affects so many of our loved ones.
Starting today, you can read he and Stefanie's story, which goes back to their courtship on through Spielman's tremendous career and ultimately the hardships later on in life. CBSSports.com's Bruce Feldman has a tremendous QA up with Spielman today which provides a great look into what the book entails, Stefanie's courageous strength, and the profound impact they've had on the medical community:
Q: What was the toughest thing to reveal in writing this book?
Spielman: Nobody likes to talk about their weakness or being broken and getting humbled. It was a little tough to write but I knew that I wanted people to relate to it, so I had to be completely honest. That's why I chose to write the book when I found out Stefanie was terminal.
What better day than today to give back and help make a difference in the fight against just a total monster of a disease. Spielman's book is a must read and is extremely accessible, even by non-football types (would make a great Mother's Day gift). Definitely consider picking it up today.
