Ohio State 4th in 1st 2013 BCS rankings

As expected, Ohio State finds themselves fourth in the first released set of BCS standings.

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

As projected by seemingly all outlets out there, Ohio State opens the 2013 BCS standings fourth. Urban Meyer's Buckeyes find themselves behind the number one Alabama Crimson Tide, the mildly surprising the number two Florida State Seminoles, and the number three Oregon Ducks. . OSU leads all BCS participants for the most appearances in BCS games during the 15 year history of the series with 9.

Unsurprisingly, no other Big Ten teams find themselves presently positioned to qualify for BCS at-large consideration. In order to be chosen from those eligible, a team is required to have at least nine wins and reside in the top 14 of the BCS standings. No more than two teams can qualify from a single conference for BCS inclusion (unless two from the same conference are ranked No. 1 and No .2, which for obvious reasons is not a scenario in the realm of possibilities for the Big Ten this season). Michigan is the closest on the outside looking in, though a second Big Ten team could also qualify automatically by winning the league's annual championship game in Indianapolis December 7th, 2013.

2013 marks the last iteration of the BCS in its current format and aside from next year's College Football Playoff's selection committee revealing a collaborative top 25 several times a year, this represents the final time a formula will be released in the weeks leading up to college football's post season.

While the current bowl formula will mostly remain in tact, six major bowls will take turns rotating in and out as semifinal sites. The winners of those two games (amongst a pool of four manually selected teams) will play for a national championship in a new playoff championship game, set to take place January 12, 2015 in Arlington, Texas.
