College football uniform watch: Week 12

Land-Grant Holy Land keeps you up to date on the latest uniform news around the country.

AAC

Louisville

Earlier this week, the Cardinals posted a black uniform with an alternate black helmet on Twitter to gauge fan interest. The athletic department has denied that the uniform is anything more than a prototype to show recruits, but it's likely the team wears them tonight against Houston.

Rutgers

Despite the clamoring by some fans for the Scarlet Knights to return to a more traditional look, head coach Kyle Flood said that there will not be any changes to the team's uniforms in the foreseeable future. This week, the team will be wearing their silver armor helmets with a red, white, and blue decal.

South Florida

As a tribute to veterans, the Bulls will be wearing a flag-themed helmet against Memphis. Select members of the team will have a patch on their jersey to honor the military branch of their choice.

Southern Methodist

Instead of their traditional white helmets, the Mustangs will be wearing a red helmet against UConn. The inverted color scheme is similar to the helmets worn by the team in the '60s and '70s.

ACC

Maryland

The Terrapins will be wearing their "White Ops" uniforms when they travel to Virginia Tech. These are the same uniforms they wore earlier in the season when they were destroyed, 63-0, at Florida State.

Miami (FL)

After their undefeated season came to an end, Hurricanes' head coach Al Golden felt the team needed something to lift their spirits. The team came out in "Smoke Gray" uniforms against Virginia Tech, 42-14.

North Carolina

Each week, the Tar Heels' equipment staff tweets a picture of what the team will wear in their upcoming game. Against Pittsburgh, the team will be wearing black helmets with their white jerseys and black pants.

Virginia Tech

Earlier this season, the Hokies wore a helmet with a nod to the stone that is featured in every building on campus. The team will be wearing the "Hokie Stone" helmet again this week, but with a "VT" decal this time around.

Big Ten

Illinois

When the Illini host the undefeated Buckeyes in the battle for the Illibuck Trophy, the team will be wearing an alternate lid. The orange helmet will feature the state of Illinois, as well as ten stars than honor the ten former Illini players who lost their lives defending our country.

Northwestern

With the help of Under Armour, the Wildcats will have a patriotic look against Michigan. However, the Wounded Warrior uniforms that the apparel company created has received mixed reviews. Those who argue against the look note that the flag has blood spatter, but the school has since apologized for the misinterpretation, informing us that the stars and stripes are supposed to look distressed.

Big XII

Baylor

Similar to what takes place in Chapel Hill, the Bears' equipment staff releases what the team will wear on gameday through social media. This week, the undefeated Bears have reached into the grab bag and have chosen their chrome helmet and green uniforms.

Texas Tech

This past weekend, the Red Raiders wore special uniform to bring awareness to the Lone Survivor Foundation. Founded by a retired Navy Seal, the foundation honors those who lost their lives in Operation Red Wings. The uniforms have since been auctioned off, with the proceeds going to the foundation.

West Virginia

In their overtime loss to Texas, the Mountaineers wore throwback helmets similar to what they wore during the '70s. The white helmet was kept under wraps, as those outside of the athletic department thought the team was wearing their yellow helmets, only to be surprised at kickoff.

Conference USA

Marshall

In honor of the 75 members of the 1970 football team who died in the infamous plane crash, the Thundering Herd wore a "75" decal on their helmets. Furthermore, kickoff at Tulsa was moved back to 7:36 pm on Thursday, marking the exact anniversary of the crash. The team will continue to wear these helmets for the remainder of the season.

MAC

Northern Illinois

As the Huskies march toward their second-consecutive BCS appearance, the team will be featured on national television more often. No better time to wear an alternate uniform, as the team did against Ball State.

Ohio

When the Bobcats host Kent State for some midweek #MACtion, the team will be wearing black uniforms as part of the "Bobcat Blackout". Fans are encouraged to wear black to the game, as well.

Mountain West

Hawai'i

As we first reported last week, the Rainbow Warriors will be wearing throwback uniforms on Retro Night against San Diego State. The university released this video, showing the details of the uniform.

PAC 12

California

For the third time this season, the Golden Bears will be wearing their all-gray uniforms when they travel to Colorado. The team is 0-2 in these uniforms, falling to Oregon and Washington.

UCLA

In last night's win over Washington, the Bruins wore their "LA Midnight" uniforms. Despite the team's traditional uniform, the all-black getup was surprisingly liked among fans.

Washington

Like their opponents, the Huskies pulled out something special for their nationally televised game. For the second time this season, the school wore their chrome helmets on the road.
