Entering the final week of pre-conference play, the Buckeyes are seeing the coming of age of third baseman/left fielder Jacob Bosiokovic. With a 6-for-11 weekend, with half of his hits being home runs, the two-time Ohio High School Division I Player of the Year has been named the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week.
The Buckeyes have opened their spring break trip in South Carolina with a 2-1 record. Prior to falling to host Coastal Carolina, 3-1, on Sunday, Ohio State dispatched Harvard, 11-0, and captured a 5-3 comeback win over Ball State.
In his first at-bat against Harvard, the rookie from Delaware, Ohio collected his first career home run, a two-run shot in the bottom of the second. RBI-singles in the third and fifth innings followed before Bosiokovic became the first Buckeye this season with a multi-home run game, lining a four-bagger over the left field fence in the seventh inning, finishing with a 4-for-5, 2 home run, 6 RBI day.
More late inning fireworks would come from Bosiokovic on Saturday. Entering the eighth inning trailing Ball State 3-1, with two on and two out, Bosiokovic recorded the game winning hit with his third home run of the weekend.. The three-run shot pushed Ohio State to a 5-3 lead, the game's final score as head coach Greg Beals defeated his former club behind Bosiokovic's 2-for-3 day.
Bosiokovic is the second Ohio State freshman to receive Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, Troy Kuhn was named the conference's top freshman for the weekend of Feb. 22-24. Ohio State leads the Big Ten with five weekly honors, the two freshmen join senior right-handed pitcher Brad Goldberg, twice the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, and sophomore catcher Aaron Gretz, the Big Ten Player of the Week Feb. 22-24.
Sitting 8-5, Ohio State has another game against Coastal Carolina before they finish their five games in five day slate with a visit to Charleston Southern on Tuesday.
