Ohio State recruiting: Ashton White, 2015 ATH, talks OSU with LGHL

With NSD '14 a little over five months away, we switch it up and look forward. Who is going to be the first recruit to commit to the Buckeyes for the 2015 class? Could it be District Heights ATH/CB Ashton White?

The 2014 Buckeyes received another big commitment a week ago in Curtis Samuel, while the '15 class is still waiting to receive its first pledge. Could Ashton White be that guy who commits to Urban Meyer and leads the way for the '15 class? Or will he wait it out and see what other teams will jump on board to offer him? Ashton is currently ranked the 19th best athlete in 247's Composite rankings and the second best player from the Washington D.C. area. A couple of weeks ago, White told me the Buckeyes were still is clear cut favorite. Has things changed since then?

I was able to catch up with White and asked the 5-11 athlete a few questions about his recruitment as well as his interest in Ohio State.

Many consider Ohio State the favorites to land you. How do you view the Buckeyes and Coach Meyer and what do you see going into making your final decision?

I see Ohio State as a great program that has a long winning tradition. Growing up, I always liked the Buckeyes and I think Coach Meyer is one of the best coaches in college football. My final decision will simply be made based on where I feel most comfortable and confident that it is the right place for me.

I know it is early, but do you have a timeline for your recruiting process? Would you commit early if it is the right fit, or do you plan on waiting it out until National Signing Day?

I plan on committing whenever I feel comfortable and ready. So my decision could be sometime very soon or could play out until National Signing Day.

You are considered a cornerback/athlete. What position is the Ohio State coaching staff recruiting you at and where would you like to play in college?

The Ohio State coaching staff is recruiting me as a cornerback. I will ideally be playing as a corner at the next level.

What are your thoughts on Maryland making the move to the Big Ten? Does that factor at all into your decision with Ohio State, given that you'd be able to play close to home twice while as a Buckeye?

Maryland going to the Big Ten is a good move for their program, I feel. It would be really cool to be able to play so close to home in front of friends and family as a Buckeye.

Do you have any trips planned to make a return to Columbus this fall? And what other schools do you plan on visiting this fall?

I would really like to make it up for the Wisconsin vs. Ohio State game this fall, and I might be going down to Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech and Tennessee.

You are being recruited by Coach Zach Smith and the fiery Coach Coombs. What has it been like getting to know them and what are they telling you they'd like to see you work on?

Those are two great coaches and it's been great getting to know them. They both love the way I play with confidence and how versatile I am. Coach Coombs wants to see me continue working hard and getting better at the little things.

The Buckeyes are full of tradition and history. What was it like to receive an offer from Ohio State, and how exactly did it go down?

When I received the offer from Ohio State, it was such a great feeling. The day it went down was after the one day camp back in June. Coach Coombs loved the way I performed and started to coach me personally. I did really good in the one-on-one drills and after the day was over, I heard the great great news. Coach Smith took me upstairs to talk to Coach Coombs and then Coach Meyer made offer.

Growing up, who was your role model and what about them stuck out to you?

I never really had a role model growing up, I did always enjoy watching Sean Taylor. I loved how he played with such an aggression and confidence.

What do you have to say to everyone reading this?

I would like to tell them all Go Bucks and I can't wait to make another trip out to Columbus.

QUICK HITS:

  • Urban Meyer: Winner
  • Forty time: 4.48
  • White Island: No Fly Zone
  • Michigan: *laughs* No thoughts.

We'd like to thank Ashton again for his time and wish him nothing but the best during his junior season.
