Ohio State vs. Florida A&M score update: Defense and special teams set the tone

In what was a wacky start to start the game for the Buckeye offense, Ohio State was able to settle down and put up ? touchdowns in the first quarter. Doran Grant also had a star effort on special teams, getting to the punter multiple times.

Florida A&M's James Owens was pinned inside the 15 on the opening kickoff. It didn't get much better as the offense took the field—the Rattlers were called for delay of game before their first snap. Damien Flemming went 1-2 on the opening drive and the Rattlers were forced to punt. Doran Grant got a piece of it, setting the Buckeye O up with great field position on the 30 yard line.

On Ohio State's opening drive, Kenny Guiton led a drive inside the 5 yard line before throwing at interception to Patrick Aiken. In what was not a wise decision, Aiken attempted to return the INT, but after just crossing the goal line, was hit and fumbled and, again, the Buckeyes retook possession inside the five. After the mess was cleared Jordan Hall found the end zone from from 3 yards out and gave the Buckeyes a 7-0 lead.

With Florida A&M receiving solid field possession to start their second drive, as Drew Basil's kickoff went out of bounds, quarterback Damien Flemming was still unable to put together a drive and Ohio State forced a 3 and out.  Two errant pass attempts aided the Buckeyes.

On Florida A&M's punt, Corey Brown electrified the crowd with a 65 yard punt return and on the next play, Kenny Guiton hit Jeff Heuerman just short of the goal line and Heuerman did the rest to bulldoze his way into the endzone giving Ohio State a 13-0 lead with over 11 minutes still to play.  Coach Meyer elected to go for two but the attempt was unsuccessful.

After another stalled drive by the Rattlers, Doran Grant was able to block a punt.  Two plays later, Kenny Guiton hit Evan Spencer for 8 yard touchdown, Spencer's first of the year.

Midway through the 1st, Guiton and the Buckeye O started off with their worst field position of the day up to that point—their own 25 yard line. Carlos Hyde entered the game on a 4th and 1 on the Rattlers' 26 yard line, was fed the rock and picked up a first down on his first carry of the year. Just before the quarter came to an end, Carlos Hyde caught a shovel pass at the 1 yard line and stepped across the goal line for six and his first TD of the year.

As if things couldn't get worse, Damien Flemming was intercepted by Bradley Roby with just 17 ticks remaining on the clock.  Kenny Guiton threw his fourth touchdown of the day the very next play, connecting with Devin Smith.
