College football's second weekend is upon. Though we know your 3:30 p.m. ET slate will likely prominently feature Ohio State against San Diego State (with perhaps South Carolina-Georgia on the second TV/laptop), what about the rest of another great Saturday of action?
Your afternoon opens with Miami renewing acquaintances against in-state rivals Florida. The two programs surprisingly haven't met since 2008. Though some (including Ohio State diplomat Kirk Herbstreit) picked UF to slip up in their season opener against Toledo, the Gators cruised behind their stout defense. Miami, meanwhile, cruised past FAU as running back Duke Johnson firmly inserted himself into the extremely premature Heisman discussions with a 186 yard rushing afternoon. Though the Canes were 3-0 as home 'dogs a year prior (5-2 during the last decade in such situations), Florida are 3-point road favorites with good reason.
The game you'll be flipping to during the commercial breaks while you watch San Diego State take on Ohio State (-28) is the potential early SEC East division championship game between South Carolina and UGA (-3). UGA's D showed plenty of reasons for concern during their 38-35 loss against Clemson a week prior.
The 'Dawgs have every shot to bounce back though, and despite South Carolina's recent dominance in the rivalry series between the two, UGA seems just too good to start 0-2.
Though not the primetime game most of you will be rooting for a meteor in, Texas' somewhat odd return trip to BYU matches up two relative historical powers (and national type programs at worst). BYU looked absolutely dreadful in a weather influenced road loss against lower tier ACC side Virginia, but Texas started slow in their own right at home against New Mexico State. This line in this one opened at UT -3.5, which was frankly like stealing money. Texas should win this one, the only question is by how much.
Finally, in their final matchup for potentially a decade or longer, Michigan plays host to Notre Dome. Though heading into the season conventional wisdom may have dictated going with the Irish and their tough nosed D, Michigan looked impressive to say the least against MAC bowl team, Central Michigan. Brady Hoke and co. are particularly good at home, and with UM set as four point favorites, you can expect them to likely take this one.
