'Following his smashing performance against Michigan State, Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett was named the Athlon national player of the week. Today, Barrett takes home even more hardware.
The Big Ten named Barrett their freshman of the week, and their offensive player of the week. This is the third time Barrett has won the Big Ten offensive player award, and his fifth taking home freshman honors.
Based on Barrett's box score, these accolades are no surprise. Barrett accounted for 386 total yards and five TDs, with 300 and three scores coming through the air on 16/26 passing, and another 86 and two scores on the ground on 14 carries. Ohio State overpowered the powerful Michigan State defense for 568 total yards in a commanding 49-37 win on the road to put the Buckeyes in the driver's seat in the Big Ten East standings.
Nathan Scheelhaase won the Big Ten freshman of the week award a record six times in 2010, followed by Penn State's Christian Hackenberg with five times, With three weeks of the season left to go, Barrett has a great chance to at least tie Scheelhaase for the Big Ten record.
