College football rankings: Ohio State up to 5 in AP Top 25, 4 in Coaches Poll

The Buckeyes move up some in the first major poll released Sunday, but not enough. The Coaches Poll thinks they're in.

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

We're all waiting for 12:45 p.m. ET and the unveiling of the only rankings that still truly matter, the final 2014 College Football Playoff rankings. But will the traditional polls be barometers for what's to come?

The AP Top 25 bucked their usual 2:00 p.m. ET release time and went first for a change, unveiling that both Baylor (No. 4) and Ohio State (No. 5) had jumped TCU (No. 6). Given Baylor's head-to-head win over the Horned Frogs, that's certainly something that makes some logical sense. But unfortunately if the Associated Press is on to something, the Big Ten champion Buckeyes would be left out of the playoff picture if the College Football Playoff selection committee draws a similar conclusion.

The Coaches Poll was more forgiving, putting the Buckeyes up to No. 4. Baylor and TCU were fifth and sixth respectively.

If Ohio State is on the outside looking in, Buckeye backers will have a legitimate gripe. If OSU's resilience in spite of losing multiple Heisman Trophy candidate quarterbacks and their historic 59-0 Big Ten title game win over Wisconsin turned enough opinions, then it'll be party time in Columbus.
