In case you've been living under a rock, the Urban Meyer and his coaching staff have been making their presence felt in the state of Florida over the past couple of weeks, as they've extended scholarship offers to a bevy of recruits from the Sunshine state.
Tampa Bay (FL) Tampa Bay Tech quarterback/athlete Deon Cain is one of the latest Floridians to receive a scholarship offer from the Scarlet and Gray.
The 6'3, 195-pounder will probably be a quarterback at the college level, but could transition to another position if things don't work out for him under center. In addition to Ohio State, he holds offers from Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Miami, South Florida, Tennessee, and Central Florida.
Only two schools have dropped by Tampa Bay Tech to see him since the contact period started, but they were two big ones in Ohio State and Miami. When Ohio State running backs coach Stan Drayton dropped by his school, he had some good news for the standout athlete in the form of a scholarship offer.
"They came by my school and I didn't know they were coming," Cain said. "Coach Drayton was talking to me and said they really liked my talent and said there was an offer for me."
While he wasn't expecting a scholarship offer from the Buckeyes, he's very excited about it and has a high opinion of Ohio State.
"I'm very interested in Ohio State," he stated. "I just like their offense and Braxton Miller a lot and Urban Meyer is one of the top coaches in college football history."
Cain grew up rooting for Urban Meyer's Gator teams and has a high opinion of the former Gator, now Ohio State head coach.
"I think he's great. He was great at Florida too," he continued. "I still root for the Gators, but Urban Meyer is a guy I've always wanted to play for."
When asked which schools were sticking out right now, he named Clemson, Kentucky, Florida, Florida State, and Miami, but that doesn't mean he won't consider others schools. In fact he hasn't visited all of the schools he wants to check out, but that will change this summer.
"Yesterday I was at the USF junior day and I'll be at the Florida junior day next weekend," he told Land-Grant Holy Land. "Then this summer I think we're going to go on a bus tour to see some schools. Two I really want to see are Ohio State and Louisville."
A decision is is a long ways off from the dual-threat quarterback as he doesn't plan to announce until late in the recruiting process, which could be at the end of his senior season or after. There will be a couple of big factors that play an important role in the decision when he sits down to make it.
"Academics, once I figure out my major, the graduation rate of the school, and fitting in with the coaches and my major," he stated.
He has already developed good relationships with a handful of coaches and is looking forward to developing a good relationship with Ohio State and Stan Drayton.
"Pretty much the Clemson coaches, (specifically) coach (Tony) Elliott, then coach (Larry) Scott at Miami, we have a close bond, and I also talk to coach (Chad) Scott at Kentucky a lot, he told Land-Grant Holy Land. "I also talk to Florida coaches a lot and am starting to build a strong bond with Ohio State."
Despite being a dominate football player already, there are a few things Cain would like to improve in order to better his game in between now and his senior season.
"My things to improve would be to be more explosive and I want to work on my mechanics. Just stuff like that," Cain said.
I could tell Cain was pretty interested in Ohio State and wants to visit, but it's going to be really hard to pull him from the south. Right now my 247Sports Crystal Ball pick for him is Florida, but a good visit to Columbus or another school could definitely change that. I think he'll end up playing quarterback at the college level.
