It had been a while since the Buckeyes had some top visitors in the 2015 recruiting class on campus for the first time in quite awhile.
The top visitor was Scottsdale (AZ) Saguaro wide receiver Christian Kirk. Who is rated as a five-star recruit in the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Kirk and his family arrived in Columbus on Thursday night and stayed through Sunday morning. He had good things to say about his first visit to Ohio State.
"We didn't do anything Thursday night, we started Friday morning. We went to the Woody Hayes football Center and kind of went through there, it took awhile since there's a lot of stuff there. I toured both the indoor and outdoor facilities. After that I sat down with coach Meyer and talked to him for awhile. Then I had three academic meetings which took up most of the day. After that I met with Archie Griffin, that was awesome. From there we went back to the hotel and went out to dinner with Johnnie (Dixon) and Raekwon (McMillan). My parents and I also sat down with Zach Smith and formed a relationship with him. Me, Jonnie, and Raekwon were just hanging out Friday night," Kirk told Land-Grant Holy Land. "Saturday was mostly just football stuff. I got to see the stadium and watch a lot of film with coach Smith. We were just going over some of the stuff I would do in the offense and what role I would play. Finally we finished up, had dinner, and that was pretty much it."
While he enjoyed almost the whole visit, there were two things that he got to do on the trip that stood out above everything else.
"It would definitely be either meeting Archie Griffin because not everyone can say they met the only person to win the Heisman two times, so that was definitely an unforgettable experience," Kirk said. "Then meeting coach Meyer hit home with me too because I didn't really know what type of guy he was, but he's definitely a guy who cares about his players. I really noticed how passionate about the game he was, I could feel his intensity and it was all about bringing the best out of his players. I want to be around a guy like that."
Kirk came into town with high expectations, but the visit exceeded what he expected going into the visit.
"I definitely came in with high expectations, especially with a place like Ohio State. You know they're going to have great stuff there, but it definitely exceeded my expectations," Kirk stated. "I think what they had what I expected football wise, but the year-round opportunities and the opportunities they have after football, academic-wise kind of exceeded it."
One of the highlights of the visit was spending time with Ohio State early enrollees Johnnie Dixon and Raekwon McMillan, who like Kirk are from warm weather states.
"Johnnie and I kind of formed a relationship at "The Opening" when we were on the same team. We had been in contact after he committed. It was good to see him again to see how he felt coming into this whole thing and talking with them it sounded like they had so many opportunities at big time programs, some even said they could come in and start for them, but they chose to bypass those opportunities to come to Ohio State. They said it was the place to be. They feel comfortable here. Johnnie always tells me coach Smith is a good guy, it's not all sales pitches with him. That was cool information to get.
Despite having good trips to Columbus and a couple of other schools, Kirk is not ready to narrow his list of schools just yet.
"I'm not going to narrow down my list until after spring ball, but even then I won't come out with any top schools," Kirk continued. "Ohio State will make the cut though."
The standout wide receiver plans on making a late decision and will enroll early at the school of his choice. When it comes time for a decision, many factors will go into it.
"My decision will either come in the Under Armour All-American game or sometime earlier after my senior season," Kirk said. "I'm just looking for a school where I'm comfortable with the people around and besides the football program a place I can succeed academically and in life. Playing time is definitely a part of it too, That's why I'm graduating early, so I can have the opportunity to come in as a freshmen and make an impact and get some playing time under my belt. Also a system that I can fit into where I can develop my schools and techniques to get me to the next level."
Right now Kirk as no scheduled visits because he had to cancel his trip to Oregon set for next week, but he's hearing from a lot of top schools right now.
"I don't have any visits coming up. I had to cancel my visit to Oregon because my mom has a business obligation," Kirk stated. "I'm in contact with Texas A&M, UCLA, and USC. As of late the schools that just offered in Georgia and Ole Miss have been in contact too. Just a whole slew of schools that are trying to get me down. I'm pretty sure I'll schedule some more visits at the end of spring, early summer to get to more schools."
I think the Buckeyes will be in this race until the end, but they still have some ground to make up on Texas A&M and Oregon in my opinion.
