Do you have a knack for writing, research, and Ohio State athletics? Do you want to learn more about digital publishing and journalism? If so, we want to talk to you. LGHL is looking for at least one more recruiting writer, as well as potentially other contributors who fill niches that we're not currently hitting.
Duties: We are looking to additional writers to the team, particularly to help with our original recruiting coverage. Our recruiting writers will need to be comfortable reaching out to recruits for interviews, using social media to aggregate recruiting news, and have flexible availability (ideally some nights and weekends) to help assist other recruiting writers, and potentially non-recruiting breaking news. Social media mastery and flexible schedules would also be helpful for other subject matter experts.
Background and qualifications: This is an entry-level position in sports media. Candidates with experience producing sports news content or sports news columns are preferred in either an intern, academic or professional capacity. A journalism or English degree (or degree in-progress) is preferred but not required. Demonstrated knowledge of college athletics recruiting is also a major plus. Recruiting candidates must be comfortable reaching out and interviewing recruits.
For any non-recruiting position, the candidate would need to be willing to own a beat or topic not currently covered. That may include soccer, hockey, women's sports, recruiting outside of football and basketball, or other topics. Outstanding football/basketball writers and analysts will be considered on a case by case basis.
Our ideal candidate:
- Has strong knowledge about Ohio State, both current and historical.
- Possesses excellent writing skills.
- Has a nose for news, both in knowing what is important and identifying where to find it.
- Is able to write in line with and adhere to our best practices.
- Is able to write and publish quickly while remaining accurate.
- Is a self-starter who can work with minimal direction.
- Possesses solid communication skills.
- While not required, being local to Columbus is a plus
- Is comfortable working in a virtual environment.
Hours: Schedules will vary based on the athletic calendar, need, and availability. Ideally, you'll contribute at least twice a week on average. Those articles may be original interviews, they may be recruiting news roundups, or they may be other original ideas for pieces or series you have.
Compensation: This position will be eligible for a monthly stipend. The size of that stipend will vary depending on experience, quality and commitment, but it bares mentioning that if money is your 100% biggest motivation, this probably isn't the best fit for you. If you would like to get academic credit for this arrangement, we will fill out all paperwork needed that you provide.
Some Land-Grant Holy Land alumni have turned their work on the site into professional employment opportunities (in some cases full time) with major newspapers and prominent new media outlets while others have parlayed their experience into full-time social media and web management positions.
How to Apply: Candidates should send writing samples to write@landgrantholyland.com.
