Ohio State has been on a recruiting roll recently and that continued today when Cleveland (OH) St. Ignatius defensive end Dre'Mont Jones announced his commitment to Ohio State. He becomes the second commitment in as many days as Dublin (OH) Scioto linebacker Nick Conner pledged to the Buckeyes yesterday.
With Urban Meyer not in the office today, Jones committed to Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson. Johnson and the Buckeye coaches in attendance were seen congratulating Jones on his commitment to Ohio State during the camp they hosted at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center this afternoon.
"Coach Johnson was telling me about the four year process they have and after he was done talking I told him that I was going to commit," Jones said. "It was my third time visiting so I think I was ready to commit.
Going into today's visit Jones knew it was going to be the day he ended his recruitment.
"Yeah I did," Jones stated. "I've been thinking about it for a month now, so when I came today I was thinking I was ready to finally say it."
The biggest factor in him deciding to commit today was growing more and more comfortable with the school.
"This was my third time coming here and I guess the third time is the charm," Jones continued. "I got more comfortable talking to them and being around the facilities. That just made me commit."
Jones has built a very strong relationship with Larry Johnson, who will be his position coach when he arrives in Columbus next summer.
"We have a pretty strong connecting relationship," he said. "We talk about a lot in our personal life, football life, education, and about high school life. Just talking to him I feel really comfortable."
Committing to Ohio State is a dream come true for Jones.
"(I'm excited to) finally put on a uniform and (start) playing," he stated. "I love the school. It's like a childhood dream for me, so me coming here is a really big thing."
Cleveland Ignatius is home to one of the best players in the 2016 class in the form of offensive linemen Liam Eichenberg. Jones plans on recruiting Eichenberg to play with him and Ignatius grad Kyle Berger at Ohio State.
"Liam and I are really close. We talk a lot, so I'm going to be in his ear a lot," Jones admitted. "I want him to come here just like me and Kyle."
Notre Dame likely finished second behind the Scarlet and Gray for Jones' commitment. He was thinking about visiting South Bend this Friday for their "Irish Invasion", but that visit is likely off.
"Michigan was starting to fall off, so probably Notre Dame," he said. "I was thinking about seeing them this Friday, but the visit is probably off."
There's one main thing that Jones is working to improve in the off-season.
"Just using opposite hands. Either left hand or right hand. Getting better in my left hand stance and becoming a better player."
While in Columbus Jones had the chance to meet future Buckeye quarterbacks Joe Burrow and Danny Clark.
"Quarterback Joey Burrow. I got to talk to him for a little bit," Jones continued. "Then Danny Clark. That's pretty much it."
Jones only plans on taking one official visit as things currently stand, which will be a trip to Columbus sometime this fall.
