Elite '15 Elite Eight
The big news on Wednesday came when '15 DE Dre'Mont Jones became the eighth member of the 2015 Ohio State recruiting class while on an unofficial visit to the campus. The Buckeyes had to hold off Notre Dame, Michigan, Kentucky and others to land the four-star pass rusher. Jones' commitment bolted Ohio State up 18 spots to No. 27 in the 247Sports Composite rankings. Land Grant Holy-Land's Miles Joseph caught up with the 6'5, 250-pound pass rusher from Cleveland St. Ignatius (OH) to discuss his commitment to the Buckeyes.
3 new offers
The Jones commitment wasn't all that happened yesterday though. Recruiting news poured in all day including three new offers. The lone offer that was sent out for this recruiting cycle went to '15 CB Darrell Miller. The Cedar Hill (TX) prospect currently holds offers from Boise State, Michigan State, Tennessee, Wisconsin and many others. Miller camped at Ohio State on Tuesday and clearly showed the Buckeye coaching staff enough to land an offer. Miller is currently a three-star prospect in the 2015 recruiting class.
Ohio State also sent out two offers to prospects in the 2017 class on Wednesday. One of those prospects is '17 ATH Maleik Gray of Lavergne (TN). The 6'2,192-pounder will likely be one of the top players in his class as he already holds offers from a handful of top-tier SEC programs. Gray is currently pegged to be a Volunteer or a Seminole on the 247Sports Crystal Ball. You can check out his highlights here.
High school freshman and current Mississippi State commit '17 LB Anthony Hines was the other who nabbed an offered from the Buckeyes yesterday. The Plano East (TX) stud committed to Mississippi State back in October of last year but other schools are still heavily in pursuit for the outside linebacker. Hines holds offers from just about everyone as 42 schools have already given him a scholarship opportunity according to his 247Sports profile. Highlights of Hines can be seen here.
OSU makes OT's Top 5, WR's Top 10
Ohio State currently has eight commits for the 2015 recruiting class but none come from the WR position. '15 WR Tavares Martin could possibly be one to change that. The three-star pass catcher from Dwyer (FL), same school as 2014 signee Johnnie Dixon, released his Top 10 yesterday via Twitter and the Buckeyes were included. The nine other schools included on the list are Alabama, Florida Atlantic, Florida State, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan State, Nebraska and West Virginia.
Another Buckeye target released his list of top schools on Wednesday. First reported by Marc Givler of Rivals.com, '16 OT Tommy Kraemer is down to five. The schools that will be fighting to land the Cincinnati Elder (OH) offensive lineman are Boston College, Duke, Northwestern, Notre Dame and Ohio State. Kraemer is a five-star in the 2016 class and the No. 1 player in the state of Ohio. The big-time Buckeye target also comes in at 3rd at his position and 16th in the nation.
Bucks host 5
Ohio State played host to three Alabama targets on Wednesday. '15 DE Mekhi Brown, '15 WR Calvin Ridley and '15 ATH Shawn Burgess-Becker were all in Columbus for an unofficial visit. The one to keep an eye on is Mekhi Brown who openly said that if the Buckeyes were to offer, it would shake up his top five. Brown stands as the 45th ranked player in the country, the 4th at his weak-side defensive end position and 6th in the peach state.
Two other visitors yesterday were '16 QB Jawon Pass and '15 RB Aca'Cedric Ware who both have been offered by the Buckeyes. Despite Pass being one of the highly ranked players in his class, the Buckeyes seem to have '16 QB Dwayne Haskins at the top of the board and unless something drastically changes, he should be the one to fill the QB spot in the class. Similar story with Ware as the Buckeyes are focused on '15 RB's Damien Harris and Larry Scott. Even after those two, '15 Cass Tech (MI) RB Michael Weber would seem to be next in-line.
More visits to come
Big-time '16 TE Jake Hausmann will be visiting Ohio State tomorrow according to Jeremy Birmingham of Eleven Warriors. The Buckeyes originally planned to take two tight ends in the 2015 class but the only realistic option at this point is former UNC commit '15 TE Chris Clark who visited Ohio State on Tuesday. No matter what happens with Clark, the Buckeyes will most likely want to add two TE's next year and Hausmann is a huge priority for the staff. The Cincinnati Moeller (OH) prospect is the 4th ranked TE and the 7th ranked player in Ohio for his class.
Two prospects that will be participating in Ohio State's camp later today are '16 WR Jalen Martin and '17 QB Shawn Robinson. Martin is a four-star prospect from Chandler Park Academy (MI) and holds offers from in-state schools Eastern and Western Michigan. Robinson is a dual-threat QB from Guyer (TX) who already holds an offer from the Cornhuskers. I briefly spoke with Robinson yesterday who said he has talked to offensive coordinator Tom Herman previously and that the Buckeyes are indeed interested.
Fullwood to commit
Finally, '15 DE Darius Fullwood set his commitment date for June 28th. As it stands right now, the Buckeyes seem to be the favorite for the three-star prospect from Good Counsel (MD). The only concern with Fullwood is if he is a take at this point. With the Buckeyes adding Jones yesterday and being in a great spot with '15 DE Jashon Cornell, he may not be. Fullwood will be participating in the camp at Ohio State today and will attempt to leave no doubt in the coaching staff's mind.
