Earlier today, Ohio State landed commitments from Cincinnati (OH) St. Xavier linebacker Justin Hilliard and St. Paul (MN) Cretin Derham Hall defensive end Jashon Cornell earlier today. In giving their verbal pledge, they immediately became the top two commits in Ohio State's 2015 recruiting class.
The really promising part is that Ohio State might not be done this month when it comes to picking up big time commitments either. There are a couple of other top players who could end their recruitment in favor of the Buckeyes by the end of July when everything's said and done.
The obvious one is Cleveland (OH) Benedictine linebacker Jerome Baker, who is set to announce his college decision on July 11. While Florida and Tennessee played a major factor in his recruitment, I would be pretty shocked if he didn't commit to the Buckeyes. As long as he commits, the Buckeyes will likely be done with linebacker recruiting for this class.
Berea (KY) Madison Southern running back Damien Harris is another top recruit who could pledge to the Buckeyes this month. I'm hearing he could announce his commitment sometime in the next couple of weeks and if he does, I think the Buckeyes would almost certainly be the pick. The Kentucky Wildcats are probably running second right now, but they would need to win this fall in order to have a legitimate shot in this race. If he commits this summer, I'm extremely confident Ohio State's the school.
Harris is pretty close with new Buckeye commits Hilliard and Cornell and it's a safe bet the dynamic duo will be recruiting the standout running back to play with them at Ohio State. All three will be participating in Nike's "The Opening 2014" next week (where SB Nation will be).
Staying with the running back position, Hubbard (OH) tailback Larry Scott is also planning to announce his decision sometime this month. It's going to be Ohio State or Michigan State for the in-state star, and right now, I think the Buckeyes would be the choice, with the Spartans finishing a close second. I wouldn't say this is over though, especially if he takes another visit to both schools before making the announcement.
Brentwood (TN) Ravenwood wide receiver Van Jefferson is still aiming to make his college decision sometime over the summer. However, I think the Buckeyes need to get him on campus one more time in order to have a real chance to secure a commitment. If he does make that visit, I see him committing to Ohio State. If he doesn't, he likely ends up committing to in the in-state Tennessee Volunteers.
Finally, Woodbridge (VA) C.D. Hylton offensive guard Matthew Burrell is a candidate to announce this month, though it's by no means a guarantee. Ever since taking his first trip to Columbus in the spring, the Buckeyes have had all of the momentum in this race. In the past, he has said that he plans to announce on National Signing Day. However, I could see that timetable getting significantly moved up, especially with all the momentum Ohio State's had on the recruiting trail of late.
