After finishing last season tied for 10th in the poll with Stanford after a frustrating series of back-to-back losses, Ohio State's improved their stature over the course of the offseason.
On the heels of being the Big Ten press' choice to win the 2014 Big Ten championship, Ohio State checks in on the first 2014 Amway Coaches Poll Top 25 sixth in the country. The Buckeyes find themselves looking up at a familiar cast of top programs. Defending national champions Florida State opens the Coaches Poll at No. 1, becoming just the second non-SEC team to earn the honor over the last 7 seasons.
With the College Football Playoff now determined entirely by subjective means, the Coaches Poll has no bearing on the national championship picture and is entirely ceremonial. For the first time since the late 90s, the poll is not contractually obligated to name the winner of the sports' championship game as their final number one team.
History dictates that the poll, which not so secretly is mostly voted on by sports information directors representing the head coaches they serve under, is typically the least representative of the sport's actual power hierarchy, mostly due to the time limitations of the individuals participating.
Still, it's never a bad thing to have a sense for what the inaugural AP Poll, due out in August, will look like. And we can likely expect the Buckeyes to be at or near sixth, give or take a spot, after today's news.
