Ohio State AD Gene Smith, a Notre Dame graduate, has said that he would "love the opportunity" to schedule Notre Dame. Now, it appears he's getting his wish.
Per Ohio State's SID, the Buckeyes and the Fighting Irish have agreed to a home-and-home in 2022 and 2023, with Notre Dame coming to Columbus on September 3rd, 2022, and with the Buckeyes making the return trip to Notre Dame on September 23, 2023.
Ohio State is 3-2 all time against Notre Dame, winning the last three meetings, with the most recent being 34-20 win for the Buckeyes in the 2005 Fiesta Bowl. Ohio State also won both legs of a home-and-home in 1995 and 1996.
Urban Meyer, of course, was an assistant at Notre Dame in 1996, and Gene Smith played there. Given the history of the two programs, it should be a great game.
Ohio State is currently also slated to travel to Texas in 2022, and will host Boston College and Texas in 2023. If that series holds, those years may be the toughest non conference schedules in recent Ohio State history. Per FBSchedules, Notre Dame's schedule for those years is mostly empty, save their traditional rivalry obligations, and a TBA date at NC State in 2022.
If this series happens as scheduled, it should be an excellent contest for both teams, and a real treat for midwestern fans.
