Antoine Winfield Jr., son of the Ohio State great, talks recruiting

Antoine Winfield Jr. is the son of a former stand-out Buckeye. He took the time to share with us all of the happenings up to date in his recruiting process.

Columbus Dispatch

If the name in the heading sounds familiar, it should. Anotine Winfield Jr. is the son of former Buckeye, Anotine Winfield (Sr.). The former Buckeye's son is following in his footsteps when it comes to football. Winfield Jr. is from The Woodlands, TX and attends The Woodlands High School where he will be entering his senior year this fall. A bit under the radar, Antoine checks in as a 3-star prospect according to 247sports.com. Currently, the 5-foot-9, 185-pound safety is ranked as the 111th prospect in the nation at his position and is also the 200th rated overall prospect in the state of Texas.

While the defensive back does not currently own an offer from Ohio State, he did camp in Columbus last week at a one-day position camp with the reigning national champions. Winfield Jr. did gain serious attention however when he was clocked at a 4.27 in the 40 yard dash. As of right now, Antoine holds offers from Houston, Michigan State, and Northwestern. With a summer full of camps and a productive senior year though, that list has the potential to expand for the young Winfield. Yesterday, we had the chance to talk with Antoine about his recruiting process up to this point. We also got the inside scoop on what schools have been showing the most interest in his services.

Check out the conversation below to see what Antoine had to say to Land-Grant Holy Land.

LGHL: What schools are you hearing from the most right now in your recruitment?

Antoine: Right now, Purdue, SMU, and Houston.

LGHL: How often, if so, does Ohio State contact you and what coach is the one who contacts you?

Antoine: I've actually never been contacted by them. The only time I talked to OSU was at their camp.

LGHL: How was the OSU camp? Your 40 yard dash times sure turned some heads!

Antoine: The camp went well. I felt like I did everything I could to stand out and yeah, I was surprised with the 40 times myself!

LGHL: Do you expect an OSU offer coming with your performance at the camp?

Antoine: Yes sir.

LGHL: What's it like being the son of a former Buckeye player? Do you feel any pressure to go to OSU? Have you always been a fan?

Antoine: It's normal. Same as any other person and I don't feel any pressure to go there. I know that the decision is mine and I'm going to make my decision on what works best for me. And yeah, I've been a fan of Ohio State for awhile because both of my parents went there.

LGHL: What do you feel are your strengths as a football player? What do you do best?

Antoine: Causing turnovers for the defense, tackling, and leading my team.

LGHL: So far, what has been your favorite part of the recruiting process? Also, what has been the hardest or your least favorite aspect of recruiting?

Antoine: Favorite part is going around seeing different facilities and teams. The worst part would be getting over looked due to my height.

LGHL: What are your summer plans? What camps or schools will you be visiting?

Antoine: I was supposed to go to Michigan State, but I hurt my foot at the Ohio State camp and I'm going to try to do the UCLA camp tomorrow (June 24).

LGHL: What are areas of your game you'd like to work on the most for your upcoming season?

Antoine: I want to work on covering and just staying in the film room and studying the game.

LGHL: Do you have a time table or a date you would like to commit or just when it feels right?

Antoine: I want to commit before the season begins.
