Confirming what Land-Grant Holy Land heard from a source this past spring, the Columbus Dispatch's Tim May first reported that Joey Bosa and Jalin Marshall will miss Ohio State's season opener against Virginia Tech. The athletic department added in a statement that running back Dontre Wilson and wide receiver Corey Smith will also miss the game. The Hokies, who upset the Buckeyes in Ohio Stadium last year in improbable circumstances, will host the Buckeyes underneath the stars on Labor Day, Sept. 7.
Though the reasons have yet to be confirmed, May framed the suspension as a "violation of athletic department policy". ESPN's Joe Schad reports that the players were suspended for marijuana and academics.
Bosa was named a Big Ten player to watch by the league offices just hours ago as Big Ten Media Days is set to get underway. The all-everything defensive lineman is expected to be one of the top players drafted in next April's 2016 NFL Draft.
Marshall, an H-back who'd seen more time in the slot this past spring (perhaps due to Braxton Miller's anticipated move to his position) also handled punt return duties in an often sink-or-swim fashion. If he wasn't busting a big play, there was turnover potential, which had some wondering if Braxton Miller might be responsible for those duties this fall.
Dontre Wilson had been thought to still recovering from a foot injury which sidelined him at the last season. Corey Smith, a former JUCO transfer, fumbled following a big play in the national championship game against Oregon.
