The Ohio State Buckeyes remain the top team in the Amway Associated Press and Coaches Poll Top 25 poll after the first week of the college football season. While not unanimous in the Coaches Poll, the Buckeyes remained so in the AP Poll, receiving all 61 of the first place votes. The Buckeyes had an impressive showing against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg after a shaky first half of play.

In the AP Poll, Alabama, TCU, Baylor, and Michigan State rounded out the top 5. Notre Dame moved up from 11 to 9, leaping Florida State and Georgia. Texas A&M made their AP Poll debut at No. 16 after an impressive win against Arizona State in Houston. The Utah Utes went from unranked to No. 24 after knocking off Michigan early in the week.

In the coaches poll, Alabama jumped to the No. 2 spot and received one No. 1 vote after a dominant victory over the Wisconsin Badgers, who dropped to No. 24, sending TCU to No. 3 after a closer than expected game against Minnesota. Arizona State dropped out of the rankings, while Texas A&M moved up to No. 19 after an impressive showing against the Sun Devils.
