The Ohio State Buckeyes men’s lacrosse team continued their early-season run, rolling over Detroit with a 16-5 win in Columbus at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
Despite Detroit scoring the first goal of the day, the game was never in doubt early in the first quarter. Senior defenseman Chris Mahoney evened out the score with 7:20 remaining in the first quarter to spark a four-goal run against the Titans.
Led by junior attackman J.T. Blubaugh, who had four goals on the day, the 11th-ranked Buckeyes led 4-1 after the first quarter. Despite two goals by Detroit to bring the score to 4-3 early in the second quarter, Ohio State ultimately closed out the first half with three, quick-strike goals to go up 7-3. Seven different Buckeyes scored in the first half.
Ohio State would not relinquish its lead, scoring another pair of goals early in the third quarter to go up 9-3 on the Titans. The Buckeyes did not ease up, however, scoring six more goals in the fourth quarter in the win. At the end of the day, 11 players scored for Ohio State, including four midfielders and two defensemen.
In addition to his four goals, Blubaugh had two assists to bring his point total to six on the day. Junior attackman Eric Fannell and junior midfielder Johnny Pearson each had two goals on the day. Overall shots were a shocking 53-26 in favor of Ohio State, and junior goalie Tom Carey had 10 saves on the day. Junior midfielder Jake Withers led the Buckeyes in faceoffs, winning 14-of-17 when he was on the field. Ohio State won 19-of-25 faceoffs on the day.
With the win, the Buckeyes move to 2-0 on the season. Ohio State faces Massachusetts next week in Amherst.
