It would be very hard for Ohio State to surpass the star power from the 2017 recruiting class, the best in school history on paper. But based on how the 2018 recruiting class is starting, the Buckeyes are certainly going to try.
The class has already started with a bang, as the Buckeyes have secured five commitments, including a five-star (defensive tackle Taron Vincent), and four other very high four stars, including QB Emory Jones. The class is currently ranked 7th nationally by the 247 Sports Composite, and has the highest ranking per recruit.
And now the Buckeyes are going after another five star.
2018 five-star linebacker Teradja Mitchell is in Columbus for an unofficial visit this weekend, per this Twitter account:
Can't wait to be in Columbus this weekend ️

Mitchell also recently tweeted admirably about Ohio State picking up a commitment from Taron Vincent:

Mitchell, from Bishop Sullivan Catholic in Virginia Bech, is currently ranked as No. 2 inside linebacker in the country, has offers from virtually every major program in the country, including Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Michigan and LSU.
The Crystal Ball is still heavily in favor of Florida State, but recent predictions, including one from 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong and 247’s Alex Gleitman, are for Ohio State, so it would appear the Buckeyes have some momentum in this race.
The Buckeyes only took two linebackers in the 2017 class, and two in 2016, so Ohio State might look add at least two, if not more, in this recruiting class. There are several strong prospects in the state of Ohio, including blue-chippers Dallas Gant and Christopher Oats.
