When the Ohio State football program holds their annual Friday Night Lights camp on the Ohio Stadium turf, a large group of talented prospects from across the country flock to Columbus to strut their stuff in front of Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes' coaching staff.
With OSU fans on hand to cheer them on, over 100 recruits took part in the event at the ‘Shoe this go-around.
Want to know what some of the prospects who participated in Friday Night Lights thought about their time with Ohio State's coaches? Land-Grant Holy Land caught up with the following campers and grabbed their thoughts on the camp and more.
2018 Ohio State commit Master Teague
Town: Murfreesboro, TN/Blackman
Size: 5’11/210 lbs
Thoughts: “It went well. I didn't compete but I enjoyed being out there and getting to talk with some of the current players and 2018 commits. I got to talk with Coach Alford and Coach Meyer and they are still excited about me and what I can contribute to the team.”
2018 CB Donald “DJ” Johnson
Town: Indianapolis, IN/North Central
Size: 5’11/170 lbs
Offers: Iowa, Indiana, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Purdue, etc
Thoughts: “It went great. I had a really solid camp and performed very well and ran a great forty. I picked up a lot of things learning from coach Coombs. He's one of the best out there and he taught me a lot that I didn't know and I definitely will be using it during this upcoming season.”
2019 OG Zeke Correll
Town: Cincinnati, OH/Anderson
Size: 6’4/270 lbs
Offers: OSU, Kentucky, Northwestern, Maryland, Vanderbilt, etc
Thoughts: “Overall, I thought the camp went well. I believe I performed very well and the camp ran smoothly. The main thing I picked up is to keep a more narrow base so I can take quicker, stronger steps in my pass pro set. I talked with Coach Coombs and Coach Stud and they said they wanted to keep building a relationship with me. They also said they wanted to get to know me and my family better.”
2019 ILB Shane Lee
Town: Baltimore, MD/St. Frances Academy
Size: 6’0/240 lbs
Offers: OSU, Clemson, Florida State, Michigan, Penn State, etc
Thoughts: “The camp went well. I learned a handful of drills that can take my game to the next level. I talked to coach Johnson, coach Davis, and coach Meyer. They all said they like me but they also don't want me to feel like I'm pressed into making a decision.”
2019 ATH Isaiah Williams
Town: Saint Louis, MO/Trinity Catholic
Size: 5’10/160 lbs
Offers: OSU, Michigan, Oregon, Alabama, Auburn, Texas A&M, etc
Thoughts: “The camp went great. I learned that Ohio State wants to recruit winners and leaders.”
2019 CB Xavier Goldsmith
Town: Detroit, MI/Cass Tech
Size: 5’8/160 lbs
Offers: Cincinnati, Colorado, Temple, Central Michigan, Ohio, etc
Thoughts: “The camp was great as always. I had the opportunity to meet new people and bond more with my teammates. Friday Night Lights always has some of the best competition in the country. Coach Combs is one of the most intense coaches I’ve been around. He's Mr. Perfection but thats what I love about him, and he loves to teach. I was suffering with an ankle injury the whole week from team work but I knew I still had to try to compete because it’s Friday Night Lights. I had the trainers tape me up. I wouldn’t have missed it for anything.”
2019 ATH MJ Griffin
Town: Saline, MI/Saline
Size: 6’1/180 lbs
Offers: Kentucky, Louisville, Indiana, Iowa State, Ball State, etc
Thoughts: “Overall the camp went really good. I worked out with a small group with Coach Coombs. During 1-on-1’s I got my hands on a couple of balls and only gave up on one or two catches so I feel like I did excellent. Coach Coombs likes his players to have strong hands so I've really been working at being physical on the line and rerouting. I spoke with Coach Coombs after camp, he said he likes where I'm at and he loves my size. He said he's going to come to a game or two this year. After that we will go from there.”
2019 RB John Branham Jr.
Town: Columbus, OH/Northland
Size: 5’9/205 lbs
Offers: Cincinnati, Kent State, Ohio, Toledo
Thoughts: “Friday Night Lights was good. It was the third time I have been invited. My favorite is 1-on-1 passing drills. I do look forward to those. Now I’m looking forward to football with pads. I worked with the top group again this year. I talked to the offensive coordinator and running back coach a lot. They love my hands and quickness. Those are their words. They told me they like my 600-lb deadlift and have never seen a 10th grader lift that much. I won best of the best at OSU camp for two years straight so the coaches talk with my coaches often.”
2019 LB Marvin Ham
Town: Belleville, MI/Belleville
Size: 6’1/212 lbs
Offers: Akron
Thoughts: “I thought the camp was one of the best in the country. The environment, the level of competition, the fan support and the campus was like no other. I was excited to be coached by the OSU coaching staff and show what I can bring to the program. I am highly competitive so I was anxious to get going. I learned how to arch my back in order to maintain true balance in my stance, the importance of moving downhill through the ball carrier and understanding and developing a true football IQ. I spoke with Coach Crow and Coach Coombs. They told me that I had a great camp and OSU would be a great place for me and they wanted to get me back on campus in the fall for some games.”
