Ohio State’s 2017 football season was all about ‘The Brotherhood’

Plus, the Buckeye men’s lacrosse team is super smart, and the men’s tennis team opens their season on Saturday.

There were a lot of season-making moments throughout the 2017 Ohio State football campaign. From a Big Ten Championship Game win to the first win over USC in decades, but the real game to define J.T. Barrett’s last season in Columbus?

The last-minute win over Penn State.

“On the heels of its most successful season on the field, the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team returned to campus this fall and put together an equally impressive performance in the classroom.”

When student athletes choose to compete at Ohio State, they know that expectations both on and off the field are much higher than elsewhere. This includes in the classroom. Academics are supposed to be a big part of all student-athletes’ collegiate careers, however, Big Ten teams and institutions are known for making that higher a priority than many others.

“Academic success and athletic success go hand in hand at Ohio State,” said OSU men’s lacrosse head coach Nick Myers. “Our men always have - and always will - attack their school work the same way they attack lacrosse. I’m proud of what they’ve done and look forward to it continuing into the spring semester.”

The Buckeyes finished the fall semester with a 3.32 grade-point average, and cumulative GPA of 3.36. (Having graduated from Ohio State, this is insanely impressive.) Of the 46 players on the roster, 36 (78%) had over a 3.0 cumulative GPA, which accounts for the most at any time in program history. It’s not just the upperclassman either, with 11 of the team’s 12 freshman also claiming 3.0 GPAs or higher — nine players even exceed a 3.5 GPA.

“Ohio State is ready to start another season, and looking to continue their success from last year, where they went undefeated in the B1G, undefeated at home, and made it to the semifinals of the NCAA Championship before losing to the eventual champion Virginia.”

This weekend, the No. 2 preseason-ranked Ohio State men’s tennis team will open their season against Xavier and Cleveland State. This double-header will feature the Buckeyes competing against Xavier in the morning and then again in the afternoon against Cleveland State (who is also starting their season on Saturday).

Against the two season-opener opponents, Ohio State is undefeated all-time. The Buckeyes are 16-0 against Xavier (last giving up a single point to the team in 2007) and 10-0 all-time against Cleveland State. The Buckeyes also return a lot of talent this season, bringing back 10 players from last year’s squad, including five singles and four doubles starters. The team also welcomes back alumni Hugo Di Feo and Herkki Pollanen as student assistant coaches.

It isn’t just the overall team starting the season ranked, there are five players who were also ranked heading into their season opener, including: Mikael Torpegaard (No. 5), Kyle Seelig (No. 26), freshman John McNally (tied for No. 57), JJ Wolf (No. 60), and Martin Joyce (No. 102). McNally and Joyce are also ranked as a doubles team at No. 55.
