The Ohio State Buckeyes cruised to a 6-0 start to their season after dismantling Indiana in the second half on Saturday. For quarterback Dwayne Haskins, it was another impressive performance, as he tied the OSU single-game record for completions (33) and touchdowns (6). He also was three yards shy of tying Art Schlichter’s single-game passing record of 458 yards. Even through all of that, Bovada, a sportsbook, has made the Buckeyes’ national title odds and Haskins’ Heisman Trophy odds longer than they were following the Penn State game.
Dropping to 15-to-2 odds to win the title, Ohio State is tied with Clemson and Georgia for the second best odds in the country. Alabama, after annihilating Arkansas, increased their odds from 4-to-5 to 5-to-7, and are the outright favorite.
On the Heisman front, Haskins entered the contest with the Hoosiers at 15-to-4 odds. Now, he’s dropped back slightly to 9-to-2. The Buckeye signal-caller has the second best odds, though, trailing only the Crimson Tide’s Tua Tagovailoa, who has incredible odds at 2-to-3. Haskins is the only Buckeye left on the Heisman odds board, as Nick Bosa’s injury dropped him from the pack, and J.K. Dobbins was pushed from 200-to-1 to off the board in the latest set of odds.
An upset to Oklahoma not only plummeted their odds to 33-to-1, but sunk QB Kyler Murray’s Heisman potential. After slingshotting up the board last week, Murray’s odds were doubled, going from 7-to-2 on Oct. 1 to 7-to-1 in the early afternoon of Oct. 8. However, Murray holds the third best chances, in Bovada’s eyes, at being the next Heisman Trophy winner.
In the title race, Texas emerged as the big winner over the weekend, moving up the board from an 85-to-1 long-shot to 33-to-1.
Below is a table with the 10 teams with the best odds to win the national championship.
