We learned early on Tuesday morning that Urban Meyer will be retiring from Ohio State football following the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1. The program will be left in extremely competent hands with Ryan Day tapped as the next head coach and several Meyer staffers reportedly being retained.
Here’s how some former and current Buckeyes publicly reacted to the news:
Nothing but love for this man right here. Couldn’t thank him enough for what he’s done for me and my family. The standard he has set here at Ohio State will continue to go on and we’ll be just fine #Respect ❤️ https://t.co/2yaceXP3Hx— Drue Chrisman (@DChrisman91) December 4, 2018
Coach Meyer... Thank you!— TATE MARTELL (@TheTateMartell) December 4, 2018
Coach Day... Let’s do this!
And, he’s not a Buckeye just yet, but Ohio State commit Garrett Wilson has (once again) re-affirmed his commitment to playing in Columbus — along with some other future Buckeyes.
I am 1000% committed to Ohio State University. Much love @OSUCoachMeyer— Garrett Wilson (@GarrettWilson_V) December 4, 2018
O-H! The train keeps moving— Jaxon Smith-Njigba (@jaxon_smith1) December 4, 2018
Meyer coached in Columbus for seven seasons, and along the way had a huge impact on his players during that time — especially the guys he led to a College Football Playoff win at the end of the 2014 season.
Breaking News: Urban Meyer is retiring. Considering moving on to work with the Saints. Which is perfect . Love you coach @OSUCoachMeyer I shed a tear everytime thinking about the impact you had on my life and many other individuals. I have so much love for this man. What he was able to do with a group of 105 guys in 2012, I will never be able to put into words. He instilled the true meaning of brotherhood, heart, passion, sacrifice, strain, and most importantly love in all of us. I have never been a part of a closer team and that started with you, Coach Meyer. I am honored to have played for you and THE Ohio State University. Congratulations on a great career! Now You better get that golf game ready because there will be no excuses when @jheuerman and I take some money off of you
I remember my Frosh year, Coach Meyer said "Ya know, maybe Akron is better for you."— Darron Lee (@DLeeMG8) December 4, 2018
I replied: " Even you don't believe that"
Him: "Then show me why I don't believe it Darron" (cont)

"Still think I belong at Akron?"
Him: "I'm so proud of you, you're everything I knew you'd become"
I almost cried right there. We took down Bama and I'm not sure he knew what that meant to me being from the South. Thank you @OSUCoachMeyer !
Your coach once told you during recruiting you will play for a national championship. Then you do 2-5 years there maybe even 6 and you don’t have a ring to show for it. I can’t relate @OSUCoachMeyer . Every team he coached had a chance even on probation. #GoBucks— Michael Thomas (@Cantguardmike) December 4, 2018
We will continue to update this article throughout the day, as more current, former, and future Buckeyes react to the news of Meyer’s imminent retirement.
