Ohio State named by CBS as Best in College Sports

Strong finishes from football, and men’s and women’s basketball pushed the Buckeyes past Alabama for the honor.

The Ohio State Buckeyes have a dominant sports program. From football to basketball to hockey, the past year has was successful for the Scarlet and Gray.

CBS Sports looked over the 2017-18 season to determine which program was indeed the best. Lo and behold, OSU ended up as the top college sports program, surging past Alabama, Oklahoma and Michigan in the process.

While football and both basketball programs didn’t bring home national titles, they all had tremendous seasons. Urban Meyer coached the Buckeyes to a 12-2 season, ending with a landslide victory over USC in the Cotton Bowl. On the hardwood, Chris Holtmann took a men’s team that missed the NIT a season ago to the NCAA Tournament; on the women’s side, Kevin McGuff also took the Buckeyes to the NCAA Tournament behind a 28-7 season. Hockey did exceptionally well, with both the men’s and women’s teams making it to the Frozen Four.

On top of the success of the ‘big 3’ sports, wrestling was national runner-ups, men’s volleyball got all the way to the national semifinals, and both the baseball and softball teams made it to the NCAA Tournament.

This wasn’t the first time OSU was named Best in College Sports by CBS. Back in 2015, the Buckeyes took home the honors after a tremendous season that saw the football team win the inaugural College Football Playoff national championship.
