Before every Ohio State football game, the LGHL Tailgate podcast will get you ready with all of the information that you need for that day’s game. Legendary Columbus sports reporter Lori Schmidt from 610 WTVN will also join us to give her signature insight into the contest.

Today, the No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes have their first home night game of the 2019 season as they take on their first ranked opponent the No. 25 Michigan State Spartans (3-1, 1-0). While OSU is a substantial favorite in the game tonight, Sparty has a long history of jumping up and biting Ohio State when they are highly ranked and have national championship designs.

The analytics indicate that that Mark Dantonio’s team will present a substantial challenge for the Buckeyes, especially when Justin Fields and the OSU offense are on the field. Coming into the game, the Spartans have the seventh best defense nationally in terms of total yards per game, giving up 253.8; Ohio State is second at 223.8.

Michigan State is the second best rush defense in the country giving up on 55.8 yards on the ground in each contest. However, they are the 71st most prolific offense, accumulating on 413.6 yards per game, while OSU is eighth with 535.6.

MSU quarterback Brian Lewerke is fourth in the conference in passing yards per game with 265, and is tied with Illinois’s Brandon Peters and Minnesota’s Tanner Morgan for second with 10 touchdown passes, Justin Fields leads the way with 16.
