The No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes got a chance to rest up for a week after a surprisingly strong win over Wisconsin. Now, the Buckeyes sit at 8-0 on the year and hold the top spot in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season. Before they get to the playoffs, though, the Buckeyes first have to contend with Maryland.

Maryland. The seemingly innocuous latecomer to the Big Ten. But don’t let the Terps fool you. Last year Maryland delivered one of the most heart-stopping performances of the season, coming within a point of beating the Buckeyes in a 52-51 overtime thriller.

The Buckeyes also received a late blow to their game plan Friday when the program announced that Heisman-candidate defensive end Chase Young would be sitting out the game amid an investigation into whether he’d received an unauthorized payment from an agent.

Nonetheless, Maryland is 3-6 on the season, with just one win in the Big Ten so far. The Terps struggled most recently against Michigan, falling 38-7 in College Park. In that matchup, quarterback Josh Jacson threw for just 97 yards and a pick, while running back Anthony McFarland -- who put up nearly 300 yards on the ground last year against the Buckeyes -- had just 60 rushing yards. In all, the Terps are losers of four-straight games, and have fallen to 13th in the Big Ten in total defense and scoring defense.

But then there’s the Buckeyes, who have the top scoring offense in the Big Ten, averaging more than 48 points per game. On offense, Ryan Day’s team is loaded, from Heisman-candidate quarterback Justin Fields to running back J.K. Dobbins, who is well on track for a career year in his junior season. On the defensive side, even without Young in the lineup, the Buckeyes still have Jeffrey Okudah to anchor the secondary.

The Buckeyes are 44.5-point favorites over Maryland. Historically, Ohio State holds a 5-0 advantage over its Big Ten opponent. Now, Ohio State looks to stay perfect on the season and in series history.

What’s the rest of the Big Ten up to today?

It’s a quiet week for the Big Ten, with just 10 teams in action. Alongside Ohio State at noon, No. 4 Penn State travels to No. 17 Minnesota in quite the bizarre battle of the unbeatens on ABC. In a less-exciting noon game, Purdue heads to Evanston to take on Northwestern on BTN. At 3:30 p.m., Michigan State faces a surging Illinois in East Lansing on FS1, while No. 18 Iowa travels to No. 13 Wisconsin at 4 p.m. on FOX.
