Team Scarlet and Gray will officially no longer be participating in this year’s edition of The Basketball Tournament. Have no fear though, as the team primarily made up of Ohio State alumni will still be hosting the Columbus regional at Capital University this July, but they are going to have to do it under a different name.
According to the team’s head coach and general manager Scoonie Penn, Ohio State is not allowing them to continue to use the name, despite the fact that they have played under the Scarlet and Gray banner for the last two summers. The issue appears to be around the fact that Scarlet and Gray is a registered trademark of the university when it comes to all things athletics.
Yes. The biggest difference here is that OSU is in the basketball team business and has a registered trademark on Scarlet & Gray. It's cool. We know the fans will come up with something amazing.— Scarlet and Gray (@ScarletGrayTBT) February 20, 2019
However, Penn — who is also the director of recruiting and player development for OSU’s men’s basketball team — is asking fans to come up with alternative names. Dozens of suggestions have been submitted via Twitter, and we’re giving you the chance to vote on which ones you like best (along with some ideas of our own) in the poll below.
Whatever you think the team should be called, make sure to let Penn and @ScarletGrayTBT know your thoughts.
As of now, Penn’s team will feature former Buckeye greats Aaron Craft, Jared Sullinger, Jon Diebler, and David Lighty, with Portland Trail Blazers’ Evan Turner as an assistant coach. More players will be announced as the event approaches. The still unnamed team will kick off its regional in Columbus on July 19 at The Capital Center.
Each regional-winning team will take home 25 percent of the ticket sales for their venue, and the eventual TBT champion will collect a $2 million prize.
What should the Ohio State alumni TBT team be called?
