Head coach Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes have made another splash on the recruiting trail, as four-star safety Lejond Cavazos announced on Friday that he was committing to the Bucks... again.

It’s been a wild recruitment journey for the IMG Academy (FL) standout. Back in December 2018, Cavazos decommitted from OSU following the news that former head coach Urban Meyer was retiring. Since then, he’s made visits to the Miami Hurricanes and Florida Gators and entertained offers from a number of other high-profile programs. However, Day and the rest of his staff put in the effort to keep Cavazos in the 2020 fold — and it paid off.
The battle wasn’t easy for the highly sought-after defensive back, as over 20 schools have offers listed, including Alabama, Oregon and Miami. According to the 247sports composite rankings, Cavazos is the 289th best prospect in the 2020 recruiting class, 22nd best safety, and 42nd best recruit in Florida.
As it currently stands, this is the eighth commitment in the 2020 recruiting cycle for OSU, and the first that comes on defense. One of the storylines heading into spring was the lack of defensive commitments for Ohio State, but that seems to have been squashed with Cavazos coming back to the Buckeyes.
While there aren’t expected to be a tremendous amount of commitments at Saturday’s spring game, Cavazos’ commitment could be the first of a number of positive stories on the OSU recruiting front. Rumors in the recruiting world indicate that the 69th nicely ranked player in the country, Henry Gray — another Florida defensive back — is on commitment watch for the Buckeyes. So, perhaps we could be seeing more BOOMs than we anticipated this weekend.
