3-star QB JP Andrade commits to Ohio State as preferred walk-on

The Buckeyes get some depth at quarterback.

There’s no doubt that Ohio State’s quarterback room has been just a bit volatile over the last four months. In Ryan Day’s first few months as the Buckeyes’ head coach, he has brought in former No. 2 overall recruit Justin Fields as a transfer from Georgia, compelling both Tate Martell and Matthew Baldwin to transfer.

On Friday night, Day added another signal caller to the roster in the person of three-star 2019 QB JP Andrade. He will be a preferred walk-on.

According to 247Sports, Andrade is the 57th best pro-style quarterback in the 2019 class. The incoming freshman will likely not be an immediate contributor for the Buckeyes, but he will add some depth in the worst case scenario for Fields. Andrade would likely have not been on OSU’s radar without the recent attrition, but he will get his chance to perform in Columbus and learn under Day.

Andrade held offers from Fordham, Morehead State, and South Alabama; he also had the option to be a prefered walk-on for Florida.

There is still the possibility that Day might be able to land a graduate-transfer option. Dublin, Ohio native Gunnar Hoack announced this week that he would transfer from Kentucky. He visited OSU this week, and could be an immediate backup this fall.
