Ohio State recruiting: Buckeyes will get an official visit from Michigan’s player of the year

4-star athlete Cameron Martinez sets OSU official date.

Cam Martinez

It’s that point in the year where the football news is seemingly scant, but with the current news that the single best players of both Michigan and Pennsylvania could be wearing Scarlet and Grey, Buckeye faithful are beaming. Well into the offseason now, the Buckeyes main focus as they gear up for the fall is recruiting. Ryan Day and his staff are continuing the trend set by former coach Urban Meyer. Recruiting is the key priority right now and as the school year ends soon, many of the best players in Ohio and nationally will be heading to Ohio State’s campus for visits and development camps. With another week closer to the of fall camp, even though it’s still to far, at least the Buckeyes can keep up with the good news in the recruiting headlines.

One of Michigan’s best sets OSU official visit dates

Muskegon, Mich., native Cameron Martinez is really becoming a household name. The Michigan Player of the Year in 2018, Martinez is a prospect who long coveted the Ohio State offer. In fact, after speaking with him personally, prior to getting the Buckeyes offer, Cameron did his very best to get the attention of the Buckeyes coaching staff. The hard work paid off as now the Buckeyes not only offered Cam, but are throwing out the red carpet in order to get him into their current 2020 class. A dynamic playmaker, Martinez not only helped lead his Muskegon Big Reds to the State Final contest this fall as a quarterback, but he is also a serious threat at receiver and to many could even make his name well known as a defensive back. The Buckeyes though, like many, are looking at him as a receiver and love what they see.

As Ohio State nears the stretch in regards to recruiting the receiver position, Cameron will certainly be a name on their target board until the finish. The good news for Hartline and Ohio State though, Martinez has already set his official visit dates for Ohio State. Martinez let Land-Grant Holy Land know yesterday that he will be in to see the Buckeyes this coming June 21-23. Martinez is becoming familiar with Columbus environs and is familiar with the staff, facilities, and program as a whole. Right now, Ohio State, Northwestern, and Michigan are the likely three teams out in front for the 23rd best athlete in the country for the 2020 class.

Yes, let’s make that official

Last week we talked about the incredible news that Julian Fleming was really beginning to trend towards Ohio State. In terms of the 247sports crystal ball predictions, Fleming is now 60/40 in favor of Ohio State with Penn State sitting in second place. To steal the nation’s best receiver prospect right out from James Franklin and the Nittany Lions would be absolutely incredible, but considering he’s thought to be the best receiver prospect in years, Hartline and the Buckeyes have to love where they are sitting right now. It’s not over yet of course with Clemson and Penn State still lurking and in the mix, but after yesterday’s little hint (hopefully) maybe this one is all but wrapped up for Ohio State and Fleming.

Via Twitter, yesterday, current Ohio State commit Gee Scott Jr. alluded to the idea that the Buckeyes could be landing the next part of the “tandem” as Gee mentioned. Now, of course that could mean anyone, but if Buckeye fans are on the same page, it’s not hard to think this is hinting at what could become reality in terms of Fleming joining the Buckeyes officially. In just two weeks that hint could come true and if it does, the Buckeyes will easily boast the best receiver class in the country.

Time will tell, but it’s looking good.

Quick Hit:

  • Late Thursday evening, 2021 defensive back Kamren Kinchens (Miami, FL /Northwestern) announced via his Twitter that he received an Ohio State offer. A 5-foot-10, 175-pound high school sophomore, Kinchens already has double digit offers with the Buckeyes being the latest to join the fold.
