The Ohio State Buckeyes have had success with recruits from Maryland. In recent years, the likes of Dwayne Haskins and Chase Young were big snags for the Buckeyes. Now, they may have found their next great player from the Old Line State, as three-star outside linebacker Mitchell Melton committed to the scarlet and gray.
Both the 247sports composite and internal grades are similar in star and class rankings, but don’t let that fool you; many top programs have made offers to Melton, including Michigan, Notre Dame and Texas A&M.
It’s been a busy June for the Good Counsel star, as he’s set to take official visits in each of the first three weeks of the month. On June 7, it was Notre Dame. Then, on June 14, it was a trip to see the Buckeyes. And lastly, on June 21, Michigan got the visit. However, the first and last visits weren’t enough; the middle visit ended up prevailing.
Standing at 6-foot-3, 235 pounds, the Olney, Md., native is considered by the composite as the 660th best overall prospect in the 2020 recruiting class, 43rd best OLB, and 19th best player in Maryland.
A selection for The Opening Regionals camp, his 247sports profile page shows that he ran a 4.87 40-yard dash, 4.27-second shuttle, and 32.10-inch vertical at the event.
According to 247sports, Larry Johnson and Al Washington were the primary recruiters for Melton. Once again, Johnson has flexed his ability to recruit (and win battles) in Maryland. Now, we’ll see if they can develop Melton into the next great Buckeye linebacker.
