Football isn’t the only sport kicking off this week…

Women’s volleyball tips off non-conference play

The women’s volleyball team is scheduled to open its season Friday afternoon in the Sports Imports Classic. Even more exciting, the Buckeyes will get to play host in the new Covelli Center. Throughout the weekend, Ohio State will get to face off against Lehigh, Texas Tech and VCU.

On the national scene, Stanford enters 2019 as the top-ranked team in the country. However, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois and Penn State are all ranked in the top-10 of the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s poll. Ohio State has a strong schedule ahead as it works through a tough and stacked Big Ten, with conference play scheduled to start Sept. 25.

Ohio State played its annual Scarlet and Gray game Saturday, also in the Covelli Center, as a preseason scrimmage.

Field hockey readies for 2019

With two exhibition matches under the team’s belt, field hockey is ready to kick off its 2019 campaign Friday afternoon against UMass at the Buckeye Varsity Field. The Buckeyes will follow-up their Friday match with a Monday afternoon game versus Boston University, also in Columbus.

Ahead of the start of its regular season, Ohio State named its three captains for the 2019 season, including Jennica Jonovich, Esther Clotet Alsina and Nikki Trzaska.

Men’s soccer adds transfer prior to start of competition

The men’s soccer team is scheduled to open up regular season play against California State University, Northridge Friday night at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Fortunately for the Buckeyes, they will have another weapon joining the squad in the form of defender Joe Ortiz. Second-year head coach Brian Maisonneuve added Ortiz, the fifth transfer this offseason, from Air Force. Ortiz started every game last season for the Falcons, and was part of the team’s Sweet 16 run on its way to a top-25 ranking on defense.

The squad played three exhibition matches since last weekend, posting a tie with Xavier, a win over Mt. Vernon Nazarene and a loss to Butler. After its non-conference slate, Ohio State is scheduled to open up conference play against Penn State on Sept. 21.

Women’s soccer falls in season openers

It’s been a slow start to the Ohio State women’s soccer season, with the Buckeyes falling 2-1 to Louisville Thursday and 3-1 to Missouri Sunday.

The Buckeyes will have a chance at redemption Wednesday when they take on UCF in Orlando, with another match scheduled with South Florida in Tampa Sunday. In total, Ohio State will go on a four-game road trip before returning to Columbus to face Miami (OH) Sept. 13.

Non-fall sports ready their schedules

Women’s basketball announced its 2019-20 conference schedule. In total, the Buckeyes are scheduled to play 18 Big Ten matchups, including nine home and nine away games. Ohio State is scheduled to open up its season against Valparaiso Nov. 10 in Springfield, Ohio, with Big Ten play starting Dec. 28 against Purdue in Columbus.

In addition, both the pistol and rifle teams have scheduled their respective conference slates for 2019-20 season, with pistol scheduled for 18 matches and rifle 13. Their seasons both open the weekend of Oct. 5.
