With the Big Ten Tournament kicking off Wednesday evening, we sent out the bat signal to our staff here at Land-Grant Holy Land dot com to make their prediction of who would cut down the nets Sunday evening when the tournament concluded.
Well, it could be recency bias because they just beat Ohio State three days ago, or it could be recency bias because they just won their third straight Big Ten championship, but all four of our writers picked the Michigan State Spartans to come out on top. A big thanks to our friends at Tallysight for helping create the graphic for our picks as well.
Now, some of you might be saying “Wait a minute, doesn’t Ohio State line up to play Michigan State possibly?” and to that I would say yes, you are correct.
However, we aren’t picking who we want to win, we’re simply picking who we think will win. The Buckeyes, as great as they’ve been lately, are not playing with a full deck right now. That definitely showed on Sunday, when four different players picked up at least four fouls before the game’s conclusion. With not much bench depth to lean on, Ohio State struggled to hang with the Spartans in the closing minutes.
The Buckeyes drew the short end of the stick getting put in the bottom half of the bracket, where they’ll potentially have to deal with Purdue, Michigan State, Maryland, and whoever comes out of the top half of the bracket (I think it will be the Iowa Hawkeyes).
Getting Kyle Young back for the B1G tournament would be a huge boost to their chances, but it doesn’t seem like Chris Holtmann is going to push him to return too quickly. If he’s not ready to play in three or four straight games this weekend, Chris Holtmann may hold him out until the NCAA Tournament begins next week.
Here is the full B1G Tourney bracket if you have not seen it yet:
Hopefully all four of us are wrong with our picks and the Buckeyes march all the way to the finish line. Regardless, it is officially the best time of the year. Happy March!
