Despite a global pandemic and an NCAA-sanctioned dead period in college football, Ohio State’s recruiting game is currently firing on all cylinders. After securing a commitment from the No. 4 cornerback in the nation in Jakailin Johnson on Sunday, the Buckeyes added to their haul with a commitment from three-star cornerback Devonta Smith on Monday morning.

Smith had long been favoring Ohio State throughout his entire recruiting process, and once he received that coveted Buckeye scholarship offer just four days ago, there was a feeling that a commitment was imminent. The No. 32 CB in the nation hails out of La Salle High School in Cincinnati, and he made his dreams a reality as he’ll soon get to suit up at the next level just up the road from his home town.
Despite his three-star status, Smith is a highly-coveted defensive back talent. With offers from nearly 30 different schools, including Alabama, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State and Wisconsin, the 6-foot, 185-pound DB is coming off a junior season in which he recorded 72 tackles with five interceptions and two forced fumbles. Needless to say, Kerry Coombs is hyped about his latest acquisition.

Ohio State entered this offseason with a huge need at cornerback, and they are off to a fantastic start in 2021. Smith is already the third DB to commit to the Buckeyes in the current cycle, joining CB JK Johnson and safety Jaylen Johnson. With still a ton of time left in this recruiting class, the sky is truly the limit for the group of guys Ryan Day is going to put together.
