Ohio State adds their final piece to their 2022 men’s hoops recruiting class

Head Coach Chris Holtmann was able to the put the finishing touches on the 2022 Ohio State hoops recruiting class with a big addition to the program on Tuesday. Plus, Land-Grant Holy Land discusses the latest on the football side of things for some Buckeye targets in the next few classes.

Bucks close 2022 hoops class

Despite not offering 2022 four-star small forward Brice Sensabaugh of Lake Highland Prep (FL) until late August, the Buckeyes were able to do enough to secure a commitment from the 6-foot-6, 240-pounder on Tuesday. The decision from Sensabaugh comes just eight days after Ohio State brought him to campus for an official visit.

The addition of Sensabaugh, the No. 75 overall player in the class, lifts Holtmann and the Buckeyes class to the second best nationally and the very best class in the Big Ten conference. The Orlando standout joins four-star point guard Bruce Thornton (No. 42), four-star center Felix Okpara (No. 51), four-star shooting guard Roddy Gayle Jr. (No. 64), and three-star shooting guard Bowen Hardman (No. 277) as future Buckeyes.

With Sensabaugh now in the fold, it makes him the basketball program’s first commitment from the state of Florida since three-star point guard C.J. Jackson of Eastern Florida State College (FL) back in the 2016 recruiting cycle. Jackson would spend three years with the Buckeyes and averaged 10.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.4 assists in 100 games with the program.

Two big visits coming for Tate

When 2023 four-star wide receiver Carnell Tate of IMG Academy (FL) initially planned on making his collegiate decision on Oct. 8, the expectation was that the pledge would ultimately benefit Ohio State or Notre Dame. However, Tate decided that it was best to hold off on his commitment in hopes of taking a few more visits to schools in consideration.

On Tuesday, we learned that Tate will begin making those visits as soon as this weekend. According to Zach Carpenter of Lettermen Row, the No. 9 ranked wide receiver in the class will stop at South Bend for a visit with the Irish this weekend before making his way to Columbus to check out the Buckeyes the following week against Maryland.

Even before the visits were announced, it already seemed as if it would be Brian Kelly or Ryan Day that would be adding Tate to their recruiting class, and it looks like those chances got even better with news from yesterday. Tate is currently graded as the 58th best player in his class and could very well be the top target for wide receiver coach Brian Hartline in next year.

• Ohio State welcomed 2024 linebacker Edwin Spillman of Lipscomb Academy (TN), who they have already offered, this past Saturday for a visit to check out the victory over Akron. Early returns regarding the visit from the Nashville native have been positive as Spillman spoke to Eleven Warriors about the stop in Columbus.

“I loved it. Just like the atmosphere there was great, just like the whole environment,” Spillman said. “I haven’t really planned out a second visit yet, but I’m for sure going to come back soon.”

• 2022 three-star defensive lineman Kenneth Grant of Merrillville (IN) announced his commitment to Michigan on Tuesday. The 6-foot-4, 335-pounder was considered an option for Ohio State at the position depending on how things shook out with some higher priority targets at the position. The Buckeyes pursuit of guys like four-star defensive linemen Caden Curry of Center Grove (IN), Hero Kanu of Santa Margarita Catholic (CA), Chris McClellan of Owassa (OK), and Christen Miller of Cedar Grove (GA) become of greater importance with Grant no longer a possible contingency plan.
